Night and Day is Joe Jackson's fifth album, released in June 1982. The title is from a Cole Porter song, and the album reflects a transition to a more sophisticated level of songwriting. This was Jackson's only studio album to reach the Top 5 in both the UK and U.S. selling over one million copies, earning gold disc status. The track "Real Men" pointed obliquely to the city's early 1980s gay culture. "Steppin' Out" earned Grammy nominations for Record of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Performance, Male. "Breaking Us in Two" also reached the Top 20 in the U.S. "Breaking Us in Two", which has some riffs similar to those in Badfinger's "Day After Day", was covered by Mandy Moore on her 2003 album Coverage. Though the album has sold over three million copies in the US, it is only certified gold, not triple-platinum, by the RIAA, for reasons unknown.
